Life is a mess. It always is. We practically live in the hot seat in school, in the workplace, in our careers, in our personal lives, everything. Anything and everything asks us the make the fundamental decision between what the world wants you to see and what God asks us to see. We spend our lives living in a vortex of constant distraction.
How do we break out of the distraction on a regular basis? I can tell you that it is more than just meditating for five minutes on the weekends. The world will not allow us to ‘get away’ for any amount of time.
I met a person whom I would title, a ‘self-controlled hermit’ the other day. This person made the decision to not own a phone, and stopped reading books years ago. Because of the world’s detrimental influence, this hermit decided to just take breaks from the world. Instead of having a radio, there was a specially conjured playlist on Apple Music. Instead of living in the city, they live out in the forest. The hermit even ‘disappears for a few years’. Not getting tied down to any one place or thing.
Here in Colorado, I expect to see people who are here for Yoga, Meditation, Hiking, or just the opportunity to be a coffee-shop hopping hippie. That is normal. It is part of Colorado’s culture. Recently, that changed.
It began when marijuana became legal. If you come to Colorado now, you will not see the same culture of chill, coffee loving hippies. Instead, entire cities have become populated by people from numerous other states, like California or New Mexico, who were looking to buy pot. My family no longer goes to several cities and even streets because if you stepped outside, you would be in much more danger than ever before.
I say life is a mess because it is. There is a daily struggle for many in my generation to give into the pressure and do drugs, smoke, or get drunk. Avoiding that is nearly impossible. So, now we have to deal with it. My older sister had a good friend who watched his friends literally become stupid and unintelligible because they smoked weed every day.
What do we do now?
If we assume that staying ‘out’ of the world is impossible without becoming a self sufficient hermit, then there must be another way.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
God has set us apart. The benefit? God gives us a real safe space. Where we can go to God and ask for help. We have access to the most efficient hotline on the planet. A line directly to the King of the Universe. And you know what? We actually get to talk to Him. Not to a secretary, not to the answering machine, but we can speak to God.
Prayer is powerful. I am not telling you something you have not heard before. You know that prayer can do great things. If we really believe that God is listening to us, why do we not talk to Him more? We have such a privilege and we squander it by wasting our time on the distractions the world has created to trap us.
How do we stand?
In Christ alone.
How do we move in a world that entices us to sit?
In Christ alone.
How do we speak when others shout us down?
In Christ alone.
“The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” –Deuteronomy 6:4
Peace go with you.
