A Song

James 1:2-3

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Adventure of a Lifetime- Coldplay

I feel my heart beating
I feel my heart beneath my skin
Oh, I can feel my heart beating
‘Cause you make me feel
Like I’m alive again
Alive again
Oh, you make me feel
Like I’m alive again

Turn your magic on, to me she’d say
Everything you want’s a dream away
Under this pressure, under this weight
We are diamonds taking shape
We are diamonds taking shape

Without the darkness, light would have no meaning. If there is no problem, the solution is needed. Without opposition, no hero rises against it. Without fear, there is no hope. Without the loss, there is no appreciation.

The world is controlled by the power of opposites. We take cold because it is the opposite of hot. We understand the very meaning of cold because we can compare it to heat. How could we possibly think that life is any different? Sunlight allows us to see shadows.

A middle school teacher, after walking into a new class and noticing how rowdy the class he now taught was; decided to tell them this story:

“There once was a group of men who lived in a cave. Though they spent their time digging through mire, their most treasured moment were shared around a fire. One little boy decided to play one day, running around the caverns. When he beheld the most glorious fire he had ever seen. The little boy found a speck of fire, and he spent the entire day trying to catch it. But something was wrong with that little piece of fire, because it was not hot, but warm. What more was the fire would move, like a living thing. It would jump to your hand if you caught it. But the flame could not really be caught, as that little boy found, instead it went back to its place. The next day the little boy went again to his strange little flicker, and this time saw it was a hole. He dug and dug until the hole opened up and the bright fire flooded the space. “Wondrous!” thought that little boy, as he beheld that fire, more glorious than ever he’d known. So he climbed through the whole and stood in the light, of a glade in the midst of glen. Standing in that light, he could not open his eyes, so painfully bright was that fire, it hurt his eyes and he could not see in that world of strange, glorious fire. But as he stood, he could gradually see, and it brought light all around. He beheld a new world, more fantastic than the caves, clearer than the crystal, more beautiful than the mire. The little boy ran back and brought every man, who had lived in those tunnels for years, but try as they might they could not stand the sight, of that bright morning sunshine that day. They cried out in pain and ran back into the caves where they said they would always remain. But the little boy cried for his friends would never see, the beauty of true, glorious light.”

That teacher I remember to this day, for he taught my class, and I remember the story well. For sometimes the darkness makes the light painful, but when you adjust, it suites you well.

Don’t crack under the pressure of the millions of details that bide for your attention today. For you feel pain at this moment, but once it blinks away, you will behold the glorious day.

Be blessed today.
